Bathroom Renovation Guide: Real Timelines, Real Costs
Bathroom and WC renovation is the most technical and least forgiving part of any renovation project. A poorly executed bathroom comes back as water leaks to the neighbor below, mold, odor, and long-term health concerns. This article distills the real timelines, costs, and material decisions from the bathroom projects Ekinoks has delivered in Ankara — without marketing language, honestly.
We’ll assume an average 5 m² Turkish residential bathroom throughout. Larger bathrooms (8–12 m² master baths) scale proportionally.
Full bathroom renovation: the real timeline
10–14 working days is a typical full renovation period. The details that affect this:
| Phase | Duration |
|---|---|
| Demolition (ceramic, fixtures, old plumbing) | 1–2 working days |
| Plumbing revision | 2–3 working days |
| Electrical (outlets, lighting, ventilation) | 1 working day |
| Plaster repair and wall prep | 1–2 working days |
| Waterproofing (application + cure) | 2–3 working days |
| Ceramic installation (wall + floor) | 2–3 working days |
| Grouting and silicone | 1 working day |
| Fixture and faucet installation | 1 working day |
| Paint, grout cleanup, final cleaning | 1 working day |
Average total: 12 working days. Anything below is possible but risky — particularly skipping waterproofing cure time, which won’t show short-term but returns 1–2 years later as water dripping into the apartment below.
If the timeline runs past 14 days, the reason is usually: custom-dimension ceramic on order, layout change (e.g. tub to shower conversion), or converting from a wall heater to a combi boiler.
How this integrates with the broader renovation process is described in our apartment renovation step-by-step piece.
Full WC renovation cost in 2026
For a 5 m² standard bathroom, the 2026 market range:
- Eko package: 95,000–125,000 TRY
- Standart package: 130,000–170,000 TRY
- Elit package: 180,000–230,000 TRY
- Elit Plus package: 230,000–350,000 TRY
All figures include 20% VAT. For full package details see our Ankara renovation cost per m² 2026 piece.
Typical cost breakdown (Standart package example, 150,000 TRY total):
- Demolition and waste disposal: 8,000 TRY
- Plumbing (materials + labor): 22,000 TRY
- Electrical: 6,000 TRY
- Waterproofing: 15,000 TRY
- Ceramic (materials + labor): 38,000 TRY
- Fixtures and faucets: 35,000 TRY
- Paint and final cleaning: 6,000 TRY
- General labor, project management, VAT share: 20,000 TRY
This breakdown is the sanity check to perform before accepting a “cheap quote.” If any line is unreasonably low, expect that line to be either skipped or added back as an extra later.
Waterproofing: absolutely non-negotiable
The most common bathroom disaster has one root cause: waterproofing either not done or done wrong. A bathroom floor and the lower 30 cm of the walls behave like a swimming pool — constantly in contact with water. If the substrate isn’t watertight, the screed beneath the tiles stays wet, water migrates downward, and 12–18 months later you have a stain on your neighbor’s ceiling.
Proper waterproofing protocol
- Surface preparation: All surfaces clean and free of texture.
- Primer: Primer compatible with the waterproofing membrane applied.
- First coat: Acrylic or cement-based waterproof membrane (e.g. Sika, BASF Master Protect, Çimsa Aquaflex).
- Corner and joint banding: Elastic banding at all corners and shower/tub edges.
- Second coat: Cross-direction second coat.
- Cure time: 24–48 hours (per manufacturer specification).
- Water test: 2–3 cm of standing water for 24 hours. If no leak, ceramic installation begins.
Skipping any single step renders the entire waterproofing meaningless. Just saying “we did waterproofing” isn’t enough; the contract must specify the material, number of coats, and cure time.
What does it cost?
For a 5 m² bathroom, proper waterproofing application — materials plus labor — runs 12,000–18,000 TRY. Significantly below this range means either substandard material or incomplete application. Significantly above suggests overpricing.
Çanakkale Seramik vs Bien Seramik
The two major brands of the Turkish ceramic market. Both have strong bathroom ranges, but their segments and character differ.
Çanakkale Seramik
- Strongest segment: Upper-mid and premium. Large-format porcelain collections like Calacatta and XL Coast.
- Typical m² price: Mid segment 600–900 TRY/m², premium 1,200–2,500 TRY/m².
- Character: Imported look, natural stone effects, large format (60×120 cm, 80×160 cm).
- Embassy and upper segment preference: First choice.
Bien Seramik
- Strongest segment: Mid segment, price-performance balance. Modesty, Loft, Concrete collections.
- Typical m² price: Mid segment 450–700 TRY/m², upper-mid 800–1,300 TRY/m².
- Character: Modern patterns, concrete-look finishes, matte surfaces.
- Embassy and upper segment preference: Main choice for standard packages, alternative in upper segments.
Practical recommendation
For Eko and Eko Plus packages, Bien’s entry and mid collections are sufficient and appropriate. In the Standart package either brand can work — it comes down to the client’s aesthetic preference. For Elit and Elit Plus packages, Çanakkale’s upper collections take the lead. See Eco Plus package for our package details.
Plumbing: invisible but most critical line item
The main water lines in older buildings are usually iron or galvanized. In buildings over 20 years old these have typically corroded and carry leak risk. Modern renovation standard uses polypropylene (PPR-C) systems.
Typical bathroom plumbing content
- Cold water line: PPR-C 20 mm
- Hot water line: PPR-C 20 mm (heat-resistant)
- Drain line: PVC 70–100 mm
- Drain slope: Minimum 2% (2 cm drop per meter)
- Vent and waste connections: Properly tied into the building’s vertical stack
The cost to convert old plumbing to PPR-C in a single bathroom is 18,000–28,000 TRY. Skip it and you’ll have hidden leaks within 5–10 years.
Concealed cistern or exposed?
Concealed cisterns (Geberit, Vitra Smartline, Tece) hide inside the wall for a more modern look. Exposed cisterns are more traditional but easier to maintain.
Practical difference: a concealed cistern adds 8,500–15,000 TRY to the material budget. For maintenance, the front access panel must be openable — so the access panel must be properly positioned during installation.
Ventilation: the only real defense against mold
Many Turkish bathrooms suffer mold problems, and the main cause is inadequate ventilation. Modern bathroom standards:
- Windowed bathroom: Mechanical ventilation isn’t required, but the window must be opened.
- Interior bathroom (no window): Mechanical exhaust fan is mandatory. 95–150 m³/hour capacity, low-noise models (under 25 dB) preferred.
- Duct: Connected directly to the exterior facade or the building’s vent stack. Vent ducts must not be left “free” in the ceiling cavity — a common mistake.
Proper ventilation costs 3,500–6,500 TRY. Skip it and you’ll have mold, health issues, and bubbling under the ceramic within 2–3 years.
Paint choice: which one for the bathroom?
For wall areas not covered in ceramic, paint choice differs from regular rooms. High humidity, mold risk, and washability are the priorities. Marshall’s Hijyen line or Filli Şato Hijyen are ideal for bathrooms. For colors and brand comparison see our paint brand comparison.
Accessibility: think now, not later
5–10 minutes of thought during the renovation creates 20 years of ease. Worth considering:
- A 3–5 cm shower threshold (a hazard in old age) versus a flush-entry shower with concealed drainage
- Solid plywood blocking behind the ceramic where grab bars might later be installed
- Bathroom door wider than 80 cm (wheelchair accessible)
- Comfort-height toilet at 47–50 cm instead of standard 40 cm
- Non-slip ceramic (R10 class or higher)
These details add 3–5% to renovation cost. Adding them later requires re-demolishing the bathroom.
What’s worth paying for, what isn’t
An honest assessment:
Worth it:
- Proper waterproofing
- PPR-C plumbing conversion
- Branded ceramic (Çanakkale or Bien mid-upper)
- Silent exhaust fan
- Quality silicone and grout
- Concealed cistern (clear aesthetic difference)
Not worth it (mostly marketing):
- “Antimicrobial ceramic” claims (limited real-world value)
- 4,000 TRY+ showerheads (an average head makes no practical difference)
- LED mirrors (looks great, LEDs start failing at month 6)
- “Ozone disinfection” systems
- Jetted tubs (low utilization rate, hard to maintain)
Conclusion and next step
Bathroom and WC renovation rests on three pillars: correct materials, proper waterproofing, and proper plumbing. If any one of these is weak, the renovation fails long-term. In 2026 Ankara, a standard 5 m² bathroom realistically lands between 95,000 and 230,000 TRY; where it falls depends on the quality tier you’re targeting.
